The building in which the museum is placed was built in the late 19th and the early 20th century. The permanent display, on the ground floor and the first floor, follows the historical development of Negotinska Krajina from its earliest origins to the 20th century. It consists of artefacts from the archeological, ethnological, historical and art collection.
The archeology of the Krajina Museum is partly presented in the lapidarium, where architectonic and sacral ornaments are exhibited, but its main part is on the ground floor where the most valuable archeological artefacts present the period from Paleolithic to the late Middle Ages.
The geology and the paleontology of the eastern Serbia are presented at the mere entrance of the Museum building. In its structure, this area has various rocks, from crystalline carbonate slates, clayey and sandy sediments to deep magmatic and volcanic rocks. This showcase contains fossil remains of flora, micro fauna, cnidarians, brachiopods, molluscs, echinoderms, fish and mammals which present the period of Mesozoic and Cenozoic.
The bone tools as well as the rock tools, found at the site Kula Mihajlovac, date from the period of Mesolithic. The Neolithic period is characterized by dishes made of baked clay, rock and bone tools, mallets, axes, bone needles, clay and rock amulets. The most interesting findings from the Eneolithic period are artefacts representing the spiritual life of the era. The period of the Bronze Age is presented by a lot of findings for everyday use: ceramic hemispherical bowls with thin walls, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic sculptures, horn and bone tools, tools from stone and flint, etc. The most important artefacts from the period of the Iron Age are the iron items for practical use: weapons- huge iron swords, spears, knives, axes and daggers; jewellery – clasps, bracelets, torques, brooches, decorative pins; items made of ceramics, material which, during this period, reaches its peak concerning its typological and ornamental qualities. Finally, Celtic money is also one of the most important exhibits of this period.
The ancient period is represented by exhibits from the time of the domination of the Romans and their civilization in this region: various ceramic and metal bowls, altars, architectural decoration, statues, gravestones, tools and weapons made of metal, small zoomorphic and anthropomorphic sculptures, jewellery, money. The findings of special value of the period are the bronze statuette of Neptune from Karataš site, findings from the shrines of Jupiter Dolichenus from Brza Palanka, gold earrings from Prahovo, marble icon of Libera and Libere and others. The archaeological display chronologically ends with exhibits from the Middle Ages.
Medieval display contains items dating from the 7th to the14th century. The findings come from the medieval settlements and necropoli. Pottery is the basic mobile archaeological material.
The museum display on the first floor consists of artefacts from the ethnological, historical and art collection covering the period of the late 19th century and the early 20th century.
The ethnological display comprises topics that represent the core of the traditional culture of Negotinska Krajina: crafts, professions, weaving, rugs, home decoration, customs and folk costume. The emphasis is put on rural Serbian and Vlach folk costume, on its grandeur and undeniable aesthetic and artistic value in the typological and stylistic aspect. The tools used for making fabric are also exhibited, as well as the items which evoke the setting of a village dining
table. Besides the rural, the permanent ethnological display of the Krajina Museum also shows the city life of the period. It is shown through several typical crafts, jewellery, clothes, and thanks to the preserved pieces of furniture and household utensils, the visitors can see what a typical room of a city house used to look like.
Historical periods are presented chronologically through historical objects and additional museum material. In the first part of the display the visitors can see the exhibits which refer to economic development of Krajina, then the 13th infantry regiment as well as the period of socialism. In the second part of the display the artifacts illustrate the period of the World War I. These items are mainly weapons and military equipment sa akcentom na bitki na Legetu.
The display on the first floor is enriched by artistic paintings. Portraits of very important people of the 19th century are exhibited here.
